I don’t have a lot of natural insulation (i.e. fat) and so I really feel the cold. I invested in a decent thermal top for an upcoming trek. Here’s my Icebreaker 260 Tech review.
How warm is the Icebreaker 260 Tech?
Possibly the most important factor in my Icebreaker 260 Tech review – is it warm enough?
The Icebreaker 260 Tech is made from 260g of 100% merino wool. That means that it’s lightweight, isn’t at all bulky, but is super warm.
I bought this top for a trek in Peru. I’m someone who really feels the cold, so being cold can really ruin my good time! I wore this on the trip, including overnight at zero degrees (in a tent with a sleeping bag) and I wasn’t at all cold.
After the trip, I’ve worn it twice a week in my climbing gym (which is in a warehouse with no heating) and it has changed my winter climbs. I no longer shiver uncontrollably when I stop for a chat!
What is the fit like?
I’m usually a UK size 8 for tops, occasionally a UK 6 – depending on the brand (e.g. FatFace). So I wasn’t sure if I would be an S or XS in Icebreaker sizes.
I now have a few Icebreaker tops, and I seem to consistently be a comfortable XS. If anything, the brand has a little more room in their tops than other brands.
The Icebreaker 260 Tech fits me perfectly. Despite being XS, the body is long enough and so are the sleeves. I’m 5ft 6 so, although I am skinny, I’m not short.
Comfort and breathability
This warm base layer is pretty soft. It’s not the softest I have, but it isn’t at all scratchy and it’s by far the best quality.
As the fit is so good, it’s really very comfortable to wear – even for physical exercise.
I’ve mentioned how lovely and warm it is, but does it get too hot? I suppose the answer is sometimes, depending on what you’re doing.
There have been times I’ve sweated on a difficult climb, but my temperature does tend to return to normal quite quickly wearing this. It’s very breathable.
And the best part is, because it’s merino wool, it doesn’t start to smell – even if you’ve got a bit sweaty. Merino wool has antimicrobial properties, so you can happily wear it for a few days without worrying about washing it.
How durable is the Icebreaker 260 Tech?
I mentioned earlier that I’ve been wearing this over winter every time I visit my climbing gym. So it’s been worn for physical activity about twice a week, and washed once a week.
Bearing in mine it’s wool, it dries remarkably quickly – faster than most of my t-shirts – and it hasn’t gone out of shape at all. Nor has it gone bobbly!
So, I’m impressed!
How much does the Icebreaker 260 Tech cost?
This is an honest Icebreaker 260 Tech review and I’ll level with you – Icebreaker is not a cheap brand. An Icebreaker 260 Tech Merino base layer will set you back £85. But is it worth it?
As I said, I’ve worn this base layer A LOT over the last year, so yes, I’m going to say I’ve got my money’s worth. And it’s still going very very strong!
This is genuinely one of my favourite items of clothing and I absolutely recommend it.
You can sometimes pick one up on Amazon for cheaper than full price.
