How To Get More Adventure In Your Life
A lot of people think I live quite an adventurous lifestyle, and I suppose that’s quite true. A quick scan of my Instagram will probably give you that impression.
People often ask me how I seem to always be on holiday, or always doing cool stuff, so I thought I’d write a guide on how to get more adventure in your life.
I haven’t always been this way
A number of years ago, I realised I was leading a somewhat boring life. Weekends consisted of shopping trips and pub visits. Week days consisted of work and watching TV.
The people I hung out with were ‘fine’. Not best friends, just people I knew. I felt like I was just ‘existing’ rather than living.
There were things I wanted to do, places I wanted to go, sports I wanted to try, but I didn’t because none of my friends were interested.
And I couldn’t do those things on my own – it was far too scary!! I’m officially an extrovert (have you ever done an MBTI personality questionnaire? I’m ESTJ) but honestly a lot of the time I don’t feel like that inside. People and places I don’t know scare me a bit!
So I waited for friends to want to join me on an adventure. I waited and I waited and no-one ever wanted to do what I wanted to do.
Eventually I realised that I was going to have to get out of my comfort zone to have the life I wanted – so I did.
What is holding you back?
When I talk to people about how to get more adventure in their lives, I find they normally come up with the same reasons why they can’t – over and over again.
And they are familiar to me, because they are things I used to struggle with too. Here’s the top three:
Lack of money
Adventures don’t come cheap. You work hard but you’ve got bills to pay, so how can you have enough money left over to have adventures all the time?
It can feel like it just doesn’t add up! But does a more adventurous lifestyle have to be so expensive? No. There are definitely low-cost/no cost adventures to be had!
But maybe you want to go overseas more? That’s never going to be cheap. But his is where prioritisation comes in.
What is more important to you? Do you need lots of stuff, or do you need great memories? How do you scale down without cramping your style?
Lack of time
I bet your life is pretty full already, right? How do you add more stuff to do when you already have so much other stuff to do?
Again, it’s about planning and prioritisation. Make an effort to plan some adventures, prioritise it, and you’ll find you have the time.
Fear of the unknown
As I mentioned earlier, one of the things that held me back was the fear of going out and doing things that I was interested in by myself. It can be terrifying to book something that you will then have to turn up to all alone!
But it can also be really rewarding. I have so many friends that I met when I pushed myself outside of my comfort zone and went along to something alone. And the bonus is that they are into the same stuff as me!
