Whether you need to take a hair dryer travelling or not depends mostly on how much you mind what your hair looks like in your Instagram snaps. But if you do take one, you’ll need a lightweight dual voltage travel hair dryer.
I always travel with a hair dryer because my I just don’t like wandering around with wet hair. It was drilled into me as a child that I would catch a chill and, whilst I’m still unclear what a chill is, I’m pretty sure I don’t want to catch one when I’m away.
What is dual voltage?
If you’re travelling far and wide a dual voltage travel hair dryer is a must. Different countries have different standard electricity voltages – for example the UK standard plug socket will give you 240V, whereas in the USA the standard is just 120V.
That means that if you have a normal UK hair dryer and plug it into a USA plug socket, it will operate at only half the speed it would at home. Which means you’ll be standing in front of a mirror for twice as long, missing valuable exploration time!
Here are two of my favourite on the market right now…
Budget dual voltage travel hair dryer
My personal favourite dual voltage travel hair dryer is the BaByliss Travel 2000W Hair Dryer.
I pretty much swear by it. So much so that I’ve been using it as both my travel and normal hair dryer for about 10 years (not exactly the same one, but they seem to last a good three years of every day use!).
It’s small enough and light enough for travel and the handle folds in making it a little more compact. But it’s also big enough to feel like a ‘real’ hair dryer. I find some other travel hair dryers remind me a little too much of a pretend Barbie one I had as a kid…
Another bonus is its power – this one is 2000W which is plenty powerful enough and won’t take forever to dry your locks when you’re on the go!
And the biggest plus? The price. Check it out on Amazon!
Splurge on a dual voltage travel hair dryer
If you’ve got a bit more money to spend, fancy something a little smaller and lighter and a wee bit more stylish, look no further than the GHD Flight Nocturne Travel Hair Dryer.
I love this dual voltage travel hair dryer because it has all the style you’d expect from GHD and plenty of power to boot.
Like the BaByliss model, the handle folds in tight for transport so it takes up minimal backpack space. But this one is a little smaller and lighter – perfect for hand luggage.
Sorry for the girly comment but it’s purple and it’s just so damn pretty! It even comes with a posh coordinating protective travel case so it won’t get damaged in your backpack.
I recommend splashing out on this one if you also need new straighteners – there is a great bundle deal available. I have the straighteners too and they are also super light and compact for travel. They are also universal voltage so will automatically work anywhere in the world.
And, as with all GHD products, it has pretty faultless reviews. Check it out on Amazon…
