Trail Running involves running over hiking trails in rural areas, often within mountainous areas or National Parks. It can also be known as mountain running or fell running. It’s a great way to get out into nature and increase your fitness level. Trail running comes in different forms and, as with road running, the challenge increases with the distance. Here’s how to have a Trail Running Adventure!
Get started with Trail Running
Getting started with Trail Running is pretty easy. You just need to find a hiking trail, put on your running shoes, and go! Hiking trails can even be found close to major cities, so even if you live in the centre of London Google ‘hiking trails near me’ and see what comes up!
Your own level of fitness will determine the distance and inclines you’ll be able to manage, but start off with something 5k or less.
A little more adventure
If you want a little more Trail Running adventure, then it’s time to join an organised event. There are organised events for trail runs of 5k and above and you’ll be running with other people that enjoy the outdoors. Races are listed on the International Trail Running Association (ITRA) website.
If you’re going to get into longer distance trail running, make sure you have the proper footwear.
Maximum trail running adventure
Trail Runs can go up to Ultramarathon distances. Add in a steep incline or two and you’ve got yourself a real challenge! Some Ultra-Trail Runs of note are the Ultra-Trail du Mont Blanc or Western States Endurance Run. These runs are over 100 miles long, so you will need to train. A lot.
