We normally think of boats as a means of transportation – a way of getting from A to B on water. But transportation can be an adventure in itself, especially if you’re travelling long enough to settle down for a good night’s sleep. Here are some great ideas for an adventure sleeping on a boat!

Get started with sleeping on a boat

A great way to try sleeping on a boat without any worry of seasickness is to spend the night on a moored Houseboat. You can find houseboats moored on many canals and calm rivers and they are pretty charming to look at! So how do you find one to spend the night on? Try Airbnb! Or, you could book a houseboat holiday and a skipper for a few days.

Or, how about taking a cruise? Cruise ships are huge and stable with everything you need for a luxury holiday on board. You’ll stop off in different locations for a day or two of exploration, and eat and sleep on the boat.

A little more adventure

If you’re after a little more adventure there are plenty of short, 2-3 day boat trips that you can go on at many locations in the world. You could spend a few days sailing the Whitsundays in Australia, or check out the many options for 2-3 day sailing trips on Viator. Most short trips have a variety of boats to choose from too. You could stay on a pirate-style sailboat, or a flash catamaran complete with hot-tub!

Or if you fancy a longer trip, G Adventures offer a number of longer sailing trips. You could visit places like Croatia, the Galapagos, or even Antarctica.

Maximum adventure

Once you’re used to sleeping on a boat, your options for maximum adventure are either to increase the length of time or increase the level of risk or challenge.

You could crew a superyacht or work on a cruise ship to live on a boat whilst getting paid to explore the world.

Or, once you’re a sailing pro, there are many advanced races and expeditions that you could take part in.

Scrambling Adventure

What on earth is a Scrambling adventure? Well, Scrambling sits somewhere in between hiking and rock climbing. Put simply, it is a walk up a steep terrain where you need to use your hands as well as your feet to maintain your grip and balance. But you’re not climbing a vertical surface. Some of the hiking I did on my Jordan trip was closer to scrambling.

Get started with Scrambling

Scrambling routes are helpfully categorised according to their level of difficulty. When you’re getting started, make sure you pick a Grade 1 route (the easiest).

Grade 1 routes are clear, easy to follow, and can usually be described as a walk which requires you to use your hands to help you on the steeper sections. If you’re happy hiking, you’ll be happy on a beginner scramble.

A little more Scrambling adventure

If you fancy something a bit more challenging, you could try a Grade 2 scrambling route. Grade 2 routes are harder than Grade 1 and you’ll need to have some rock climbing knowledge before attempting them. You may need a rope and harness to negotiate some of the sections on a Grade 2 route.

Maximum Scrambling adventure

Advanced scrambling routes are steeper, more physically challenging, and often include some seriously steep drops to negotiate.

Grade 3 scrambling routes are on a par with the easiest rock climbing routes. That means you’ll need to be comfortable using climbing techniques and confident using the relevant safety equipment. There will be several sections of a route where the drops will be significant.

Hot air balloons are colourful, peaceful and pretty damn instagrammable! Many a bucket list includes a flight in a hot air balloon, so here’s how to have a hot air balloon adventure!

Get started

Most of us have seen hot air balloons floating high up in the sky, but have you ever seen one take off up close? If you want to check it out but aren’t quite ready to book a ride, find out where hot air balloons take off near you. You’ll be able to get a feel for what happens and decide if it’s for you!

You could even check out Bristol Balloon Fiesta (the largest in the UK) or Albuquerque Balloon Fiesta (the largest in the world)!

A little more hot air balloon adventure

If you’re ready to climb into a basket and be lifted into the air by a giant balloon, book a flight. Just Google ‘hot air balloon ride near me’. You might even get to fly above your house!

Maximum hot air balloon adventure

How about taking a hot air balloon ride in one of the most spectacular locations in the world? Check out Capadoccia in Turkey, Bagan in Myanmar or even the Serengeti.
